Is to stop thinking of parts of this place as a gentleman's debating society, and start thinking of it as a video game.
Oh, there are rules. I see certain boards as "off the game field," like Community, where the players buy each other beers between rounds. I like to see "Space" kept about space and technology, although since space and technology in America are deeply entwined with politics, some political crap is unavoidable.
In the main arena, there are rules, too. When someone rezzes in packing verbal and intellectual heat, they're going to be treated a bit more roughly than someone who's unarmed in one or more of these areas, or someone who has declared themselves to be non-combatants or checked their weapons at the door. One of the problems I've had with ER is that he has seemed to shift smoothly between the Mortal Combat zone and the one occupied by non-belligerents like Mary Anne. I've probably misfired because of it.
We shouldn't take this all that seriously. None of us is a major political force, and our opinions here aren't going to change the world. This board isn't widely read, and floats off to one side of the blogosphere as a comfortable little island. If I managed to convince every last person here of my views, it would barely make a burp in the scheme of things.
