I drive an older pickup, carb, inline six, auto, not well-known for fuel economy. It's kind of like pushing a 4 by 8 sheet of plywood flat-side into the wind. I dropped my highway speed to 60 several months ago, then to 55, picked up 2MPG. With the prior mods I've done* it's running 18-19 MPG @ 55. In-town sucks rocks, but I drive very little in town. And, we won't talk about towing............. I want to put a bed-cover on it, and will at the first chance I get. That's good for a mile or two improvement.
*Opened the exhaust up with an aftermarket system.
Installed a better cam when I rebuilt it.
Removed the automatic choke, installed a manual version.
Changed the carb out to a Canadian Version.
Cleaned up the intake manifold with a bit of judicious grinding.
And, the emmissions are better than spec when new..........
Let's be honest, it''s not going to get any better, only worse, figuring on $4 bucks+ by the end of summer. We might as well get used to it.
