3 decimal places? With an odometer that only tracks to 1 decimal place (I suppose you could interpolate a 2nd decimal place by the position of the dial) statistically I think its overkill and unnecessary.
I find my mpg isn't extremely consistant over fill-ups and floats within about 1 mpg of 18 high or low. I wonder if its the fill-up, the gas, inconsistant driving speeds, or what. I've tried filling up with the notch on the slowest setting to see if that helps. Supposedly its supposed to reduce vapor return. Probably an urban myth, but it seems to help.
The last thing I've been trying is actually driving the speed limit instead of 5 over as is my habit. I'm guessing this actually has the greatest gain. I've contemplated driving the slow lane at 60 mph, but I can't seem to bring myself to leave early enough in the morning to try it and I have issues with driving to slow.
My wife is shocked that I'm still tracking mpg since I started in November when I bought my truck. Its a habit I got in to, but mostly I enjoy the science and analysis of trying to eek out as much mpg as I can.
