Tech7 ran over to me her chest keeping up.
"They finished it!" she exclaims.
"Finished what?"
"The Steinmetz-Farnsworth"
"I know about the Steinmetz SUV, but what the heck is a Steinmetz-Farnsworth?"
Tech7 drops her head and lets her jaw hang low, as if I am somehow retarded not to know what she is talking about.
"Come with me."
Tech7 grabs my hand and over to her car, a pretty nifty black Chrysler 300 which she personally massaged and tweaked.
"Get in."
I climb in the car and buckle up - always - as I know that her driving is always enthusiastic.
We have crossed the airfield to the vehicle modifications hangar. We flash our ID passes to the guard stationed at the door and he waves a scanner over our badges.
I follow Tech7 down a hall and she stops 100 yards at a big yellow door.
"you know 3 months ago you mentioned how cheap H3s, Yukon Denalis and Ford Excursions were getting and were thinking of picking up some to customize?"
"Yes, so?"
She swings open the door.
"I present to you the Steinmetz-Farnsworth."
She clicks on the light switch next to the door and thirty spot lamps or more come to life all around the room. The object they are pointed at is immense. It is ocean blue with lots of chrome accents catching the lights. It is a vehicle like none I have ever seen. It reminds me of a slightly stretched Hummer H2 but the bodywork is much smoother and seamless.
"I see it...and I am impressed but I still don't know what it is?"
She walks over to a little podium and fiddles with a few buttons. The car starts rotating and I see it is on a turntable such as those found at auto shows. A projection appears on the north wall.
"What you are looking at is the culmination of a five year research program, code named STEINMETZ-FARNSWORTH. A vehicle which uses electromagnetic tuned induction (hereafter referred to as ETI) as a power source. The day of petrol powered vehicles is past. This ETI powered vehicle weighs almost 4 tons and yet uses not a drop of gasoline.
Philo Farnsworth is America's greatest shame. A man who invented television and yet whose name is remembered by almost no one even though his invention and the principles behind it are used constantly and have enriched our modern world. His principle of tuned induction made possible not only television but the vehicle you see before you.
The flux inductor is the heart of the ETI system. It is composed of an intricate series of coils which can resonate with waves whose lengths are between .05 nanometers to 10 to the sixth power nanometers. This coil oscillates and can be tuned to resonate with the electromagnetic fields found all around us. By a proprietary technique the flux inductor coil uses polarity fluxing of local fields and converts this magnetic energy to drive a vortical dynamo via magnetic induction repulsion. The ETI system has been tested and has successfully generated the equivalent of 1 gigawatt per hour.
The ETI system is therefore capable of powering a vehicle, device or power generation facility anywhere on Earth. This vehicle you see before you is named PHILO in honor of the man who unknowingly was the man not only to invent television but to bring us a solution to all our power needs."
Music starts playing and it is a hybrid of Beethoven's fifth symphony and some millennium technojazz. Tech7 hits a switch and the music stops abruptly and the turntable freezes.
"So what do you think?"
"What do I think? What do I think? Why wasn't I informed of this? Who authorized this? What agencies besides ours knows about this? This is a disaster.
"What the heck are you talking about...this is salvation! The US will never be dependent upon foreign oil again! Every nation will be able to build factories and power plants and no smokestack will ever pollute the beautiful blue skies of Earth again! It is a DREAM come true."
"No. No. It's too much. Too soon. It will have to be destroyed. Mankind isn't ready for free power yet. They don't know what to do with the power they already have."
"Don't you dare. Who are you to judge what man is ready for or not. Who are you to sit up in your citadel of perfection and dole out technology incrementally to those you deem worthy! This technology will save millions of lives...perhaps billions over time. It's mankind's hopes and dreams. Yesterday, I watched some poor guy film himself for youtube and get down on his knees and BEG for those of us who have these technologies to share them with the world. It was pathetic. Folks are desperate and disillusioned. THIS is the second coming! THIS is the best thing to happen to man since splitting the atom - and even better. A dream!"
"And that's all it will remain...a dream."
I wake up.
My hologram projector blinks off and on.
Journal Entry: I dreamed about being back in the 21st century again just before the petrol wars. The people seemed so real. The girl in the dream was vivid in all details, down to the emotional inflections of her voice as she shouted at me. She argued I should not halt the ETI development program. It's funny I should mix ETI with the 21st century in a dream. My history engrams didn't do their job very well. Mixing the 24th century with the 21st is simply bizarre and inexplicable.
Perhaps there was a reason for it. Dreams always seem to have reason.

"Perhaps there was a reason for it"
