This is a pervasive and extremely comforting mythology that assumes the only reason we are having problems with energy, oil, gasoline prices, etc. is because some evil people have simply refused to "flip a switch" that would lead to cheap and abundant energy for all. Related sub-myths involve the same evil people hiding magical technologies that, for example, would let cars run on water.
It's more comforting than the reality that we are dealing with a serious supply issue generated largely by the rest of the planet finally beginning to move out of reeking poverty and assume a prosperous lifestyle.
It also conveniently allows one to evade the knowledge that those currently screaming loudest in Washington are the same groups that spent the last thirty years choking the life out of our domestic energy supply.
I wouldn't have believed the Democrats would have the balls to call the oil companies on the carpet on a supply/demand issue, but their faith in the ignorance of their constituents seems to have paid off.
