Just overhearing that show can nearly give me a stroke....

Essentially that show just uses buzzwords from science to do 'magic'...

Its bad enough when people spout nonsense... but -and this is what really sets me off on this board- when nonsense hijacks the language of science to give itself credibility that is when I cannot hold my tounge!

I will simply wince at bad science in a science fiction movie, but when bad science is presented as 'this is the way it is- see the "science" says so!' that is when I will go thermonuclear.

I am aware that some here see my stance as 'intolerance', or an ego trip, or just me being a bully- but that is not where I am coming from.

We live in a time where knowledge of science and reasoning is becoming more and more critical to our lives- more and more we are having to make decisions that dont just affect a small village, they have SERIOUS long term implications for millions, and even billions of people. These issues are scientific ones- serious issues that can only be understood using science.

Now, more than at any time in our past, we need a populace at least familiar with science and rationality. We cannot afford to have demons, ghosts, and angels running rampant in the minds of people that HAVE to make informed decisions based on fact.

We have people ON THIS BOARD that think that they can 'refute' global warming simply by saying that yesterday was the coldest day in a century where they live. We have people fighting stem cell research because they think the bible is against it- they are totally ignorant about the science and the bible was written thousands of years before it was known that the human body was made of cells- yet that primative mindset is holding up research on treatments that could help untold numbers of people. People that have not done any study on the issue fight nuclear power simply because they fear the word nuclear.

A while ago I wrote a VERY long post refuting the bad science in a global warming article TB linked to- If you read that post you will see that I made a point of showing how simple it is to do the numbers yourself to see that the claims in the article were wrong. This is something that I feel strongly about- ANYONE with the ability to do very basic math and who has basic reasoning abilities is able to evaluate at least some of the claims on these issues.

When people hijack the language of science to promote gibberish they do REAL harm... First they dishonestly give their garbage an air of credibility in order to suck in more gullible converts, and second they vandalize the science- they drag it through the mud and pervert it in attempt to make it look like it supports their delusional beliefs- they make it more difficult to get REAL scientific concepts across.

Very often the garbage that they promote does REAL harm...

When I say that one of the several posters of pseudoscience here is posting garbage or nonsense I am not simply stating an "alternate viewpoint", I am stating a fact- The offenders here often steal words and terms from science and string them together to make their nonsense sound more plausible- (plasma vorticies, wavelength, resonance, harmonics, polarization, energy, particle beams...etc..)- when they do this they invariably misuse the terms and as a result what they say makes no sense, and can easily be shown to be wrong- it IS garbage!

This is NOT like an argument over religion or politics where everyone is entitled to their opinions! People who try to sell nonsense by dressing it up in "sciencey" words deserve to be harshly shut down, to be called the fools and liars they are. When reason won't work with them - as this thread proves- there is NO reason to treat their views with respect- they are ignorant fools that CHOOSE to be ignorant fools.

I respect the ignorant that want to learn, but the ignorant that work at staying ignorant and continue preaching nonsense should be treated with the contempt they deserve.
