It's a damned good thing that the search for an ivory substitute happened before the current generation of conservatives came down the pike. Had it been today, a multinational consortium would have shot the last elephant, and only then announced the need for an ivory substitute.
Only after the last barrel of oil is pumped and the last pristine areas of the world fouled will conservatives be willing to meaningfully look for substitutes.
After all, the oil infrastructure is too well set up to abandon. Too many pipelines, ships, refineries, and so on. Another analogy is the cocaine distribution network. There are better designer drugs but the production, transportation and financial networks are already in place for cocaine.
Too much inertia and investment to change.
At least we still have elephants.
