Ariane 5 is indeed old fashioned technology (using the Earth's rotation speed at the equator) and designed to launch two comsats at the same time (comsats that keep getting slightly heavier all the time).

It's the shuttle's failure that boosted Ariane, but Ariane's simplicity was also its asset.
