"From the Trimotor to the DC3 was a very minor step -- basically just a modest engineering improvements and gaining experience with the manufacturing and design process.
From Spaceship Two to practical, cheap, resuable, airplane like transport to orbit is still a long way off, and probably requires new basic technologies."
I meant a SpaceShipThree capable of +500 miles or perhaps +1000 miles.
And a SpaceShipFour capable of +2000 miles.
That is more important than orbit, and that is easier in some respects than orbit. And it does eventually lead to orbit- if nothing else we will have more spaceports.
It could lead to many things, maybe pipelaunchers, or maybe Maglev assist adding 1/4 or 1/3 of the suborbitial velocity needed- in other words, a fairly good spaceport.
