I use the products of government "National Map Activities" every day of my professional life. If I had to pay a company to create new topo maps for every project I worked on, I'd be out of business. And that is only one example. USGS air photos, geologic maps, professional papers, Digital Elevation Models, reports, and yes, stream flow data are essential to those of use who work to provide y'all with the raw materials that are the root of all economic activity.
A few month's back, you and I had a discussion about the potential of petroleum resources in North Dakota. Our discussion at the time was prompted by the release of a study done by the USGS assessing the extent and potential of the formation. At the time I noted that the release of this study would spur exploration and exploitation of the resource.
A "National Map Activity" creating jobs in the public sector? Go figure.

- Volcano monitoring of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines saved 5000-20000 lives
- Wondered how long that would take. (n/t)
