I was afraid that crack about Techy would give me away, but you took the hook anyway.
A sense of humor is a terrible thing to waste.
But seriously, you did say
"The liberal solution, give them more power." That deserves to be answered seriously.
The conservative solution, presumably, is let the market work its magic. And how are you going to do THAT, Tom? Nationalize the media? Liberate the Universities? Ban Hollywood?Send troops to implement a strictly Libertarian system? Replace the Constitution and the Federal Code with the works of Rand? Fill Congress and the White House with Objectivists? Or let "the people" take over and make it happen? No, I'm sure you don't want any part of that. No telling what "the people" will come up with.
You can't legislate a free market into existence. Hell, you can't even install one with bayonets. There has never been one and there will never be one, because the very act of making it free allows some centers to gain power at the expense of others. To prevent that requires some form of coercion. And that is the Law. And the Law either comes from executive fiat or democratic and constitutional negotiation.
The only totally free market is the underworld, organized crime. Is that what you want? The Libertarian Objectivist paradise is as unworkable and Utopian as the Socialist Workers' Paradise, it ain't gonna happen because there ARE people out there who want power. And if you really think the Invisible Hand of Adam Smith is going to stop them then you're the one who's been had, big time.
Name me one time, one period in history, one nation where the pollyanna republic you propose has ever existed. Don't blame the socialists, they are a very recent development. Oh yeah, there's a lot of pious humbug about "free markets", but they crush anyone who tries to actually put one together. And of course, our capitalist friends are perfectly willing to enlist the government to help them do that, too. It's not like bayonets were never used to break a strike, although we're past that now. We're more civilized.
There has never been a Libertarian paradise as you fantasize it because the businessmen never wanted one either.
