You do know the man was crazier than a bedbug, don't you? That he wandered about in a fantasy world inspired by books of chivalry and roamed the countryside, picking fights with windmills (and strangers, goats, hogs, and ordinary people he mistook for giants, trolls, sorcerers, Moors, pirates and evil knights), regularly getting beat up for his trouble.
His actions were supported by an intensive knowledge and deep aquaintance with the scores of ancient books of maidens and knight-errantry which were the pulp-fiction and bodice-busters of the era, and invariable he quoted from them at length as he attacked shepherds and travelers, or beseiged roadside inns he mistook for castles.
In a way, the identification with TB, our own Quijote, is spot on. Don Q himself used a chivalric name to sign himself -- "El Caballero de la Triste Figura".
"The Knight of the Sad Figure".
