In 1966, an Australian banana farmer had a UFO sighting with possible related physical evidence in the form of a circular impression of mashed down vegetation which came to be known as a "saucer nest."
1966 Tully Saucer Nest
Tully Saucer Nest
The Wiki article on crop circles, mentions 17th and 19th century circular formations in fields of grain, the earlier one allegedly the work of a "Mowing Devil" and the later presumably caused by wind and/or rain, appearing as it did after a storm.
Therefore,it could be argued that it was the Tully saucer nest of 1966 which gave rise to the modern crop of circles, which began appearing in England in the late 1970s, according to the Wiki article, and to their association with UFOs.
Note that all the "noise" created by the crop circles since the late 70s has served to effectively obscure the much more interesting and possibly much more important Tully saucer nest and related UFO sighting.
Of course, eyewitness accounts carry much more weight in some circles than in others.
Finally, I would just note in passing that, strictly speaking, even if flying saucers are real, that in and of itself does not necessarily mean that they come from "outer space."
Maybe the HZ needs a MOTU board.
