If man can do it, man will do it.
The creation of geometric formations or other designs in grain fields is well within the technical capability of human beings, even if it may not be immediately apparent specifically how this formation, or that, was rendered.
Never underestimate the capacity in our species for such mischief .
Beyond that, and while I try to be open-minded and receptive to all possibilities, it seems highly unlikely to me that any ET would traverse presumably vast distances to communicate in such a fashion. Read Vonnegut's The Sirens of Titan for an extremely entertaining and thought-provoking account of curious modes of communication by an alien, space-faring species - the Trafalmadorians.
That said, I cannot rule out the presence of ET in our midst. In fact, there are other, much better indicators of such a possibility, but even these are highly contestable, as we all know.
Nevertheless, you might want to consider that crop circles would make a very effective method of discrediting the entire field of ET/UFO research.
