"The research facilities, transporting and protecting the talent, and enforcement of production values for truly good journalism are not free and never will be."
That is exactly the out dated thinking that is dooming the mainstream media. I could care less what a "talent" thinks about a story or how they use their production company to spin it. The members of my generation just want the raw information. We are smart enough to form our own opinions and don't need some 'talent" telling us what they should be. And if we feel we need to get more depth on a story its easy enough to google the background information needed.
The reason newspapers and organizations like AP are doomed to extinction is that the Internet puts information directly into the hands of the individual without the need for any "talent" to travel somewhere and assemble it. What do I need some "talent" telling me what is going on in space when astronauts are twittering and NASA streams the video live over the Internet? I no longer have to depend on some "talent" to decide how much of a Shuttle launch I will see or read about. I am able to go to the source and get as much raw information as I want. The business model they existed on is as outdated as the village blacksmith.
Newspapers and network news may have served a valuable function in the pre-Internet age but now they are just a legacy of an isolated lifestyle that is fast disappearing. The danger is that in their death throes mega-corporations like AP may handicap us with bad laws and legal precedents in their doomed attempts to salvage their out dated business models. As I stated I plan to grant their wish and no longer link to any AP news article. There are enough alternatives they are no longer needed.
