"It's true that reporters don't create the events reported in the news, but their expertise, and nerve, and background knowledge, as well as their research staffs, make news reporting a creative enterprise just as much as any other form of writing."
Actually that is one of the great values of the Internet, that it provides a means to get news without the reporters spin on it by going direct to the source. New social networking tools like Twitter and Youtube have already shown how news will be distributed in the 21st Century. Look at the protests in Iran. Iran banned the reporters but the news still came out, in fact it came out faster then if reporters would have been involved 'spinning" it. And Iran was unable, and is still unable, to censor it or stop the flow.
Really, if people wanted their news pre-digested like babies newspapers would not be in the trouble they are in today. But people, especially young people like me, want the raw information so they are able to make up their own minds on issues and not be told by the reporter what they should be thinking.
I view 15-20 news sites a day, many foreign with different perspectives and given that experience its easy to see how uninformed earlier generations were that depended only on what a newspaper or network news program told you. And I usually get the news hours sooner then form those snail news sources. Newspapers and network news could disappear tomorrow and most people of the net generation would not even notice let alone care. The world has changed with the Internet and both newspapers and network news are dinosaurs that really don't matter anymore. If anything that was one of the lessons of the Obama campaign for president.
