If AP just sells to papers they why do they post their stories on their own news website?

I hope they don't charge me with a copyright violation for giving you the URL for it.
If they have a problem with their clients making the stories available free they should just require their clients to keep AP stories behind a firewall. AND not offer them free on the Internet themselves. Problem solved. They shouldn't try to rewrite the copyright laws because they don't want to modify their relationship with clients that are giving their product away.
In terms of your needs, I have probably already paid for some of them via my state and federal taxes dollars. That is fine as its good to help the poor. And I have given away a number of computers over the years to charity.
But that has nothing to do with what AP is trying to do.
