First of all, I have never been a journalist. I just think they have a right to be paid.

Secondly, to equate defense of intellectual property rights with marketing blood diamonds is as extreme as it is inaccurate. People have a right to their own work, to market it, and to make contracts with people who wish to sell it. Period.

I have to go finish writing a play now. I will give its use, free and clear, to our children's theater workshop. If anyone else wants to use it, they will have to have my explicit permission, in writing, or they will have to pay for it. Either up front, or after they also pay the legal fees for the lawsuit. Am I creating a monopoly on my original works? You bet. Is it legal? Yes. If I joined an organization that markets plays for children and they, by contract with me and with others like me, refused access to those who didn't want to pay, would that be legal? Yes.

AP is no different. You're just ticked off that they are looking for a way to get you to pay for something you believe you have a right to have without fee, because it was that way before.
