I was a townie. So were they, I assumed. I think that's why I was comfortable walking at that time of night but also knew the threat in a micro second.
There is another element. The gang. One drunk guy in a truck? That's one thing with different tactics on my part. Two? Getting dangerous. Anything above three drunk guys is retreat, now, fast, don't think. They were looking for trouble because they were bored and fighting made them feel bigger than they were.
I worked with a guy at what would be considered a blue collar job. He was a pretty good bloke, we had beers after work now and again. One night he asked if I wanted to go get drunk and get in fights. I basically told him that I had to wash my hair.
But that's what he wanted to do. He wanted to go to a bar, a club, drink too much and get into a physical altercation with a stranger over nothing.
Odd.
To this day I still don't quite get it. Not sure I want to understand that mindset.
But, now, give him a gun and a grievance.
Give them a mission, an ideology, a cause; then use them. For objectivist rebels they are easily harnessed. Directed. Pull the string and away they go.

The whole thread (44 posts)
- Fear, a story

- and another perspective (lighthearted from my point of view)
- From a different perspective
- I probably wouldn't run... but not because I am some macho badass...I just can't run fast
- You have to wonder what motivates assholes like that...
- You call them rednecks.
