Re: "Are jobs obsolete?"

PS.

Referring to your comment "...the idea of a particular job as a lifelong entitlement." That is not necessarily the issue here. When I first started college I could already foresee a world where I would stay nowhere long enough to get the pension and the gold watch. I knew I would have to job-hop my way up the career ladder before I ever got my first job!

I even designed my training that way. I did not study for a particular profession (astronomy) without first assuring myself it would provide me with transportable skills (math, science, computers) that would be useful outside astronomy. When I finally found a career that appealed to me, (aerial photo mapping), I did not become a specialist in that field, I studied related areas
that would make me more flexible (I studied Geography and Cartography). I worked in 7 places over 4 decades in related mapping and remote sensing technologies. It wasn't until I realized that even though my salary was increasing, I was going to be a job gypsy and wind up nowhere, that I got smart and hopped onto the tail end of the "traditional" path, the government-job-and-pension route. I made it by the skin of my teeth. It was a big cut in pay for me but it saved my jive ass.

You can't create a career, you have to surf it. You can fall off your board at any time.
