Re: Katrina deja vu

Isn't it a bit early to declare victory and dismiss the whole affair as liberal media hype? Aside from being one of the most insensitive things I've ever seen you post (and that's saying a lot), this is not going to go away that easily.

This time, it won't be just hippy environmentalists, Greenies and cutesy seashore critters who will be affected, it's an awful lot of salt-of-the-earth small business types, as well as major industries and everything in between. That's a somewhat more Republican constituency, and they're pissed. These people will hire lawyers, and BP is not going to get off as easy as Exxon did in Alaska.

As far as the long-term effects are concerned, just because they are not immediately quantifiable, they are nonetheless still there. Too many people depend on the Gulf for too much for environmental damage to stay swept under the rug indefinitely. If national interest drops off it will be because the media goes away, not because the problem did.

As far as your pathetic attempt to Hayward the volume of oil into a PR- manageable cube, you should be thinking of it in another way entirely. The size of the cube is deliberately misleading, a clever and cynical way of psychologically implanting the suggestion that it is nothing to be concerned about. Consider that all the gold (Au) ever mined in human history would fit in a cube roughly 60 feet on a side. No big deal, right?

You should instead be reflecting on how so little oil caused so much damage, cost so much money, and how miniscule a benefit we would have derived from it if we had managed instead to use it for its intended purpose.

Shame on you Tom, you've outdone yourself this time.
