I'm glad you took time to consider some of the things that were said here.
I think this issue is about more than free speech.
Lets get back to the joke. The joke in not simply offensive- it depicts the husband ready to force himself on his wife. At least one of the options he gives her is considered unpleasant by many women.
In the early 80,s it was still socially acceptable to drink and drive. This was before MADD had much of an effect. Drunk driving was almost a sport in itself. People related stories of how they made it home from the party or the bar and bragged and joked about the stupid things they did on the road. Cops poured your beer out and told you to drive carefully.
Thanks to Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, The social acceptability of this act was negated. A change for the better. They achieved their goals by raising people awareness of the tragedies cause by drinking and driving.
Remember How the Taliban treated women in their society? What they did somehow became socially acceptable to the Afghani people.
These are two examples of how societies can change the way they can treat groups of people within their own society. Change for the better is brought about by active campaigning to raise awareness. The other type of change was established by the Afghanistan people “adapting” to change.
