Lee can be creepy.
But I wouldn't take it to heart. The Americans who matter know better than he, about Europe.
I think a good case could be made for exactly the opposite of what Lee claimed: that instead, the wealthy, privelaged, and successful tended to stay in Europe. It was the gullible folk who believed the propaganda went to America. And the prisoners and indentured servants and the religious cults and utopian community builders.
More specifically: you guys are great! There have to be more ways than one to look at any issue. When Americans start showing amity for Europeans, and vice versa, then it's time for everyone to reconsider their position.
