I think that may very well be why the IRA decided to stop the terrorism so quickly after 9-11.
I think they knew that the best course of action right now was to take a breather and let things settle down...Give peace a chance if you will...They can always return to arms later.
Suprizingly, the IRA position to negotiate increases every day that peace exists.
Unfortunatly, the Palestinians aren't as politically astute as the IRA. They saw 9-11 as their opportunity to step up the level of violence. They opened the door for Isreal to futher step up the violence. After 9-11 the US is no longer in the peacemaker role. The Isrealies knew this. The Palestinians apparently did not: They must have bought into their own "Isreal is a puppet of the USA" propaganda.
