According to some accounts it takes 8/10 penny to mint 1 penny. There's not much of a margin there. I for one never pick up pennies. I start picking up coins when they are dimes. However by letting pennies be thrown away instead of keeping them in circulation means the feds will have to keep minting more. Maybe they would anyway, I don't know. I have heard some good arguments for phasing out ol' Abe, but I don't think we could handle the thought of not being able to break a dollar into it's 100 parts. Rounding to the nickel is a hard concept, and I bet many Americans would see it as a plot to increase profits of corporations. One day when all money is just numbers in a bank account we will have finally outgrown the penny, but not yet.
