It was well explained at the time as a phenomonon related to the absence of sunlight during the southern winter season and the atmospheric bynamics unique to the south.
Sunlight is responsible for ozone in the upper atmosphere.
The industrial pollution explanation for the ozone hole does not explain why the northern hemisphere, exposed to vastly more industrial pollution, does not suffer from the holes much more. Nor does it account for natural sources of chlorine injected in vastly larger quantities into the upper atmosphere. The enviro political agenda is as strong in science today as eugenics was 100 years ago, and is very likely to be held in as much regard 100 years from now.
