New refrigerants are less efficient, requiring more power from compressors. Where does that power come from? It adds up to quite a bit. In cars, too. New refrigerants are caustic. Costs of home and commercial refrigeration increased greatly, a blow to poor areas of the world. And the refrigerators don't last as long, either. Remember that twenty-year-old fridge that worked just fine? Not any more. Better hope that old one lasts a few more years.
Estimated cost just in the United States, just to convert refrigerants, ranges up to $130 billion, although exact costs are hard to figure.
Now, if you add in the costs around the world, and then other things that were or or going to be banned, like methyl bromide (talk to a farmer), Halon fire systems, and reworking everything in a spray can, we start to talk real money.
