Ozone conspiracy
There is a conspiracy theory floating around that DuPont was behind the whole ozone debacle because their patent on Freon was about to run out, and they had an expensive patented replacement ready.
Appealing to anti-envirowacko types, maybe, but when I did a bit of research, like most conspiracy theories, it didn't hold up. While I did not do an exhaustive study, it appears the patents for Freon-type chemicals ran out sometime in the 1950s, and as far as I can tell, several chemical factories were making "Freon" under various names when the ozone flap started.
Still, like most good myths, that doesn't keep it from showing up over and over again.
