Oh, what the heck. Here it is:

California results, from the Secretary of State's site:

"The recall was a blow to the democratic process!!"

Yes on the recall: 4,754,724 (55.4 percent of those who voted)

Arnold for Governor: 4,030,985 (48.7 percent of those who voted)

Arnold OR McClintock for Governor: 5,136,763 (62.1 percent of those who voted)

Cruz Bustamante for Governor: 2,619,230 (31.6 percent of those who voted)

From 2002:

Gray Davis for Governor: 3,533,490 (47.3 percent of those who voted)

You do the math.

Not surprising that the Democrats howling about the destruction of the democratic process have quieted down considerably. Davis got the axe, good and proper, and the Democratic Party of California is painfully aware that a considerable number of those swinging that axe were registered Democrats. The Democratic Party is also painfully aware that it wasn't just Davis, but the Democrats in general that were getting the message, or Bustamente would be governor now.

"The recall process is illegitimate, wrong, and horribly expensive!!"

Recalls were tried in California 31 previous times, including twice against Ronald Reagan. Don't remember a huge outcry back then about the "illegitimacy" of the process.

The second Arnold was victorious, many of the same Democrats who were bitching about the illegitimacy of the recall process, its threat to democracy, and its expense began threatening to instigate a recall against him. Democrats wear hypocrisy quite comfortably.

"The recall was a setup by the California Republicans/right wing millionaires/the right-wing conspiracy!!"

Basically, this is a lie. As you say, I had a front row seat. The history of the recall can be read here. A grass roots effort from day one, with the Republican establishment being dragged in reluctantly later.
