Who's to say the public and media won't get just as bored with Mars? A couple of missions in, the funding gets cut and the torches come out again.
As long as the space program depends on public excitement, it's doomed. People get bored with things, they just do. NASA has to do it's thing regardless of what kind of ratings NASATV gets, regardless of how many hits the websites enjoy.
What makes you think public excitement about Mars can be sustained? Just wait til the crew is on it's way, their telecasts coming back showing them doing routine maintenance and the kind of research the public-at-large doesn't give a whit about...and watch the excitement fall like a rock in water. If spaceflight is tied to ratings and web hits, what'll you have then?
Flags and footprints. And at least on the moon the footprints last longer.
