If it makes you feel any better, I don't see any reason for using flechette shells in the kind of war Israel is fighting either. Flechette shells are for taking out large numbers of armed personnel, and are not a weapon for fighting an enemy that hides behind civilians, or for taking out individual targets. Nor do I think missiles make the world's best assassination tool in an urban environment, but then I wasn't there.
The ten-year-old did not know he was a bomber, but that didn't bother the people who sent him. The cell phone hooked to the triggering mechanism rang while they were examining his payload, and only a faulty mechanism saved everyone's life.
BTW, detailed statistics on fatalities and other things can be found here. A good place to bookmark.
Tallying up casualties in both the Occupied Territories and Israel, you get 461 Palestinian minors, and 104 Israeli minors. The data may be newer than your source.
Of the 461 Palestinian minors, 300 were 14 or older. Of the Israeli minors, 92 were 14 or older. Nothing specific seems to be said about whether any of them were armed or otherwise engaged in fighting.
The actual context of the casualties is difficult to ascertain under the best conditions.
