The Romans were tough bastards. They could not have cared less. Read the history by Polybius about the destruction of Carthage and Corinth. For the matter, Google the Internet about what the Romans did to the Jews after the Bar Kochba revolt. Some of our current troubles in the Middle East can be traced back to Rome's purging Judea or all Jews and then repopulating it with discharged Roman vetrans. Modern Jerusalem is based upon a Roman city named "Aelia Capitolina" (ancient Jeusalem was razed to the ground). The Dome of the Rock is built upon the site of a Roman temple. It was the Romans who renamed the province of Judea to "Palestine".
