Masada
If you go by Josephus Flavius, the Masada legend has grown considerably in the telling. However, Flavius has to be taken with the "history written by the winners" grain of salt.
Would have been interesting to see how the Romans would have treated the Middle East and the Jewish rebels if the rebels had made a habit of sneaking into Rome and slaughtering marketplaces full of men, women and children.
