Flame — HabitableZone

Is there a correlation?

I highly doubt there is a correlation between religeon and politics on the habitablezone. There certainly are plenty of correlations in other pockets of the world (real and virtual) however. The Habitablezone is a unique community based on scientific discussion and isn't, as a community, very tolerant of religion. When I say not very tolerant, I wish to add they are respectful to the individual's religious beliefs, but tend to scoff at the practice of religion as a whole.

I believe I am unique among HZers. Pretty much everyone here is agnostic, even those who belong to one religion or another. After spending roughly 4 years here I am convinced I am the only one that belongs to a religion and actually believes it. I have my own reasons, and don't care to share publicly since there is little chance that this community would be able to grok it. I bring it up when asked or feel there is a reason to, but try to respect the community and not mention it frequently. By the way, I'm Mormon, and a moderate leaning conservative politically speaking. I used to be much more conservative, and believe this community has a moderating influence on me.

Religion and science for me are like oil and water. When mixed appropriatly you can get a nice vinaigrette. When mixed inappropriatly which happens most of the time IMO you get something like an oil spill in a harbor ready to be ignited by debunkers from the scientific community and religious zealots alike. I believe a balance can be found when one approaches them with the attitude of "I don't know everything about science, but am curious to learn more, and fit it into my perspective of the universe."and concurrently "I don't know everything about religion, but am curious to learn more, and fit it into my perspective of the universe".

Politicswise, I would be lying if I said I didn't base my opinions on my religious views. I don't know how a believer (such as myself) could do otherwise. The hard part is being totally consistant, I'm not always. I would bet 99% of believers aren't either whether they swing left or right.

Good subject.
