Raising children

You've raised children. You know what it's like to have to sit on your hands when they are screwing up.

Yes, I have, and yes, I do. I also know that I wouldn't sit on the porch and watch one of them get run down by a car even if she did walk out into the street on her own. I also know I would do my best to interfere with any other kid, even one of my own, who was intent on perpetrating grievous bodily harm on my kid.

God appears not to mind enough to stir His Stumps.

This is why I don't believe in a personal God, in Whose Image and Likeness mankind was created. What kind of image and likeness is that?

Either there is no God, or the Image and Likeness of the personal God in which we are made more closely resembles the people who listened to Kitty Genovese screaming in the street, or the God that exists is so remote and alien from our human selves that we have not a clue What It is. The latter conceptualization, incidentally, makes an appearance at the end of the Book of Job. I suspect it's the first; I hope fervently it's not the second; I concede that it could be the third.

And I wonder if you are quite the skeptic you profess to be. You sound like a Lutheran to me.

Or maybe you were a Devil's Advocate at the Vatican in one of your past lives. ;)
