The idea of a deity that, as my pastor likes to put it, knows you by your name, and has a specific and personal interest in how you live your life, is extremely uncomfortable if you think about it, and it's not surprising that many people discard it in favor of relaxing impersonal concepts like Universal Oneness or All Is God. When you're thinking about crossing the road illegally, it's the difference between dealing with a traffic light, and dealing with a large policeman--who knows where you live--standing on the corner, and looking you straight in the eye.
I like your anaology Tom. I would like to add that no matter how much you want that traffic cop to be just a traffic signal, wishing won't make it so. I think once one comes to the realization of God, the responsibility to act with that realization becomes heavier and must affect all aspects of life. I can understand why some would choose to reject or ignore the responsibility. It can certainly be burdonsome.
I suspect that a lot of people who claim to be agnostic do so for the same reason a person might claim to be "moderate" in politics: it avoids a lot of grief that people might otherwise hand you for a less fuzzy set of beliefs.
I don't agree with the political half of your statement. Or perhap I'm the exception. I choose to be moderate politically, because I like parts of both philosophies. It's like going to a buffet ang putting a hamburger and a taco on your plate. You can never do that if you only order from McDonalds or only from Taco Bell. Who says you can't drive through both windows?
