re: Raising children

Beats me. If I had all these answers, this board would be getting a lot more traffic.

I do know that many people in history who have suffered horribly have still expressed a strong faith in God, so obviously it is possible to reconcile the two.

It would be a remarkable world indeed if God prevented people from being hit by cars, or falling out of trees, or dying of illness, or anything remotely tragic or unpleasant. While such a world might be less unhappy--assuming the concept of happiness could even be considered valid--it would be just as alien as anything you might imagine for God. Of course, this is the popular concept for heaven, so there it is.

As REB has speculated, if there is a God, or an afterlife, it's entirely likely that what we consider horrible tragedies are considerably less serious and less permanent from God's viewpoint and the perspective of billions of years. Not much comfort on our end, of course.
