agnostic

I tried to be an atheist for a while, but concluded I didn't know enough to prove there was no God. As I still don't believe, agnosticism was my default position. Tried a Unitarian church for a while and found it unsatisfying.

However: I was raised Catholic in a very Irish-American Catholic family with a strong public service ethic. Catholicism, as you may know, is not only a religion, it's a culture. So my political outlook is very heavily influenced by family religion. I admire the Christian ethic, but I don't look forward to the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting, amen.

I like and understand politics, having grown up among local politicians. I know there is no such thing as an honest politician, because they have to lie to themselves as well as to the rest of us to get things done, but I know there are virtuous politicians. I would like to know where most of them are, because they sure aren't on the national stage, most of them.

I used to think of myself as a left-leaning moderate. Then I spent a few years here, on and off. Now I'm a lot more left and a lot less moderate.

I tend toward social support for the disadvantaged, and I tend to think it should have secure funding, which means it doesn't depend on volunteers and voluntary contributions, but on government support.

I'm a proud First Amendment freak. I believe the Bill of Rights may be the greatest political document of the recently finished millennium. Anything that undermines it should be stopped in its tracks immediately.

I also think we may be nearing the end of the Republic, unless we start to pay very close attention. It's still not too late, though our attention span grows shorter by the month.
