I agree with Raoul's suggestion that man created God, not vice versa. Moreover, the Bible is pure science fiction, it's influence a horrific demonstration of the immense power of storytelling.
My feeling is that the burden of proof lies with the beleivers. I don't need to prove to myself that God doesn't exist, but to accept the opposite I need more than a pulpit-pounding con-man screaming at me on Sunday-morning television. Mass sing-alongs don't really sway the argument either.
Have I looked for God? Yes. He ain't there. In a way, I no longer even want to beleive, because if He does exist, he's one evil, mean-spirited SOB. Jesus, otoh, may well have truly existed, and may have been a wise and good man. But the son of God? C'mon. There's medication for that kind of delusion.
Anyone who hasn't read Sagan's "Demon-Haunted World" would be doing themselves a favor by securing a copy and partaking of true wisdom, rather than the constant stream of self-serving superstition that gets spewed by organized religion. The only prophet they're really interested in is spelled differently.
