The Left's agenda is power.
All they care about is regaining power, nothing else matters. Losing a city isn't even on their radar screen. Their tunnel vision keeps them from seeing anything beyond their single minded goal. Whether it's having open borders or the talk of letting teenagers vote. So long as they can get votes, they'll consider any and all options for short term political gain. Long term consequences are of no concern to them.
