You've given me the chance to explain -

I've been suffering nicotine withdrawal symptoms over the last week or so. I was 'in self-denial' until tonight, when I realised how irritable I've actually been the whole time. Please forget the 'patronizing arrogance' - it was a cheap shot. As you recognized, that type of cheap anti-Americanism does have a foothold down here, but I've never had a bar of it. I've had close links with the US all my life - culturally, scientifically, and through family.

Funny though how I bristled like that ..

Bowser got me thinking with this -

Keep 'em honest while I'm a bit pre-occupied. It takes a person with a bit of moss between their toes to have the proper perspective.

I don't know who he had in mind, but I took a lesson out of it

Regarding the issue of 'protecting' Communists vs Fascists, I don't mind conceding that point for now - the Yale article link was interesting. Probably I'm suspicious due to my leftist bias. One hears stories of fascists and Nazis in police and armed forces all over the 'civilized' world (Europe, England, Australia and the US) - ominous, and possibly significant.

The issue of free speech vs censorship isn't easy, and I generally come out in favor of free speech. Better to debate them out in the open. You mention US law says that the line is crossed when hate-speech turns into hate-action. That does seem the best and most common-sense definition .. I suppose Germany has better reason for its particular race-hate laws. Both historically and currently, hate-speech there would more likely be an incitement to action.

I do believe in being vocal against totalitarianism, racism, and terrorism - but I guess I'm still finding my way to dealing with posters like Lee or Nick. Like you I am against exclusion: that would encourage a 'sealed environment' discussion group - no thanks. I would rather challenge them, where appropiate - hopefully without spats and abuse.

So .. thanks Rob

Daniel
