I don't remember how old you are, but I've heard this kind of crap about every Republican president I'm old enough to remember. Each one, Nixon, Reagan, Bush I (Ford wasn't around that long) was going to be the end of civilization. Heck, most of what I read here and elsewhere could have been taken off the talking points for Reagan and just changing the name.
If you want to talk only recent history, just in a few areas of foreign policy alone, if the Left had been in charge:
- We would have unilaterally disarmed in the face of the Soviet Union during the Cold War, and backed off from every confrontation the Soviets engineered in their hemisphere and ours. The Left believes this would have resulted in a non-belligerent Soviet Union, and peace. I believe otherwise, based on Soviet behavior over decades. I seriously doubt the Soviet Union would have collapsed under these circumstances.
- Gulf War I would not have been fought, and Saddam would now have nuclear weapons. This is not speculation--the program the U.N. broke up after that war was very close to completion.
- Libya would be building nuclear weapons. Pakistani scientists would still be selling atomic secrets across the globe.
- We would not have invaded Afghanistan either. Oh, I know a lot of the liberals here aren't in that camp. At least not now. But check back to what the Left was saying at the end of 2001. That would have included a lot of Democratic politicians, too, if they had not been cowering in the face of public opinion.
Oh, the good news would be that Europe (on both sides of the Iron Curtain) would like us a lot better. Like they liked Finland, and for pretty much the same reasons.
