This question is a useful touchstone to separate reasoning environmentalists from the nutballs.
Nuclear power is the best interim solution, although I would like to see more advanced reactor technologies come into play. Pollution aside, oil is, frankly, too valuable for other purposes to just burn. I am encouraged that China, which appears to represent the largest oncoming demand for energy, is seriously working on both hydropower and nuclear approaches. Both have environmental issues associated with them, but if the global warming connection with human CO2 production is assumed to be correct, these issues are much less serious on a global scale, and environmentalists who subscribe to that premise would have to admit that.
As for Iran, please remember that leaders in Iran have specifically advocated nuclear war with Israel in so many words. The right to bear arms cannot be separated from the issue of whether the person seeking a gun is an upstanding citizen, or a psychotic. It's idiotic to place Iran in the same category as the U.S., France, England, or for that matter, even China. Can we be reasonable about this issue, too?
