A lot of people who cannot conceive of a complex free economic system operating with only minimal application of government force, have no problem at all understanding and accepting a natural ecosystem, with no external controls whatsoever, containing millions of species whose prime goal is self-survival, and that is largely stable and robust for thousands of years.
Ironically, we hear constantly how we cannot "interfere" with such systems without screwing up the delicate balance of a near-infinite number of complex relationships. Liberals who have no problem with massive state interference in all aspects of the economy are aghast at the idea of "managing" a forest to prevent fires.
