re: warning shots

If someone were shooting at you, would it cause you to slow down? Would you necessarily know that it was "friendly fire"? Do the bullets have little contrails that say "USA" or "WARNING"?

I would not have been speeding towards the check point and they were shooting in front of the car. I can imagine a lot of split second confusion, especially at night.

This hasn't been the first incident in which people have been killed near checkpoints for not slowing down after having been shot at as a "warning". Somebody needs to put psychology and procedure together to observe where they conflict.

Apparently the Italians didn't realize this.
I agree, but think it was a communication conflict. Check point policy has been established for sometime.
Can we not "warn" people without using the tools with which people are killed to do it? Warning shots work in the movies because everyone has read the script.

I don't think the insurgents understand any other kind of warning and they are for whom the policy was developed.

And another thing: do you know how the Italians drive? For them, that may not have been considered "speeding". That may have been considered a moderate speed of approach, until someone started shooting at them.

Check point news-flash.

For all those who will be performing duty at check points throughout Iraq. Please note that our comrades the Italians are known for speeding when driving automobiles so lets take that into consideration when a vehicle is approaching at higher than normal speed. That just won't work, the Italians need to follow protocol and this goes to a communication problem.

At this point we are debating over the articles Raoul provided and until investagations are completed we are just speculating.

I stand by my original post to Raoul and don't think it was out of line. I am amazed how this thread has developed.
