Communism

I can see the allure of Communism to a young mind.

When I was in High School studying Communism (In the 1980’s during the Cold War) I remember thinking, this doesn’t sound that bad. People work together for the good of the country, which, in turn, benefits the people. Everyone has a job, a place to live and food on the table. Everyone is equal. Doesn’t sound that bad at all.

Then the reality comes in. The problem with creating a utopia is human nature. There will always be humans who want power. IMO this is communisms fatal flaw. You end up with rich class of people in charge, ruling by fear, and a bunch of lower class workers who are not motivated to work and only do so out of fear.

With the proper leader, maybe the USSR could have been successful. It would have to be a leader who cares about his or her people and respects human rights. It would have to be a leader that people look up to and think, I’ll give 100% for my leader.

Still, even with a proper leader, communism lacks another thing. Competition. Competition is what drives progress. Without it we do not evolve- we stagnate. And I don’t see how completion could be incorporated into true Communism.

I think Karl Mark’s heart was in the right place when he dreamed up Communism, but he was dream land. He failed to see the reality Communism, when applied to human nature, and he failed to see the need for competition. Communism was doomed to fail.
