The blogosphere is driven by traffic. Successful blogs get lots of traffic. That doesn't mean they are better than others , but it means they have by work or luck driven traffic to their site.
Nothing is more self-critical than the blogosphere. Blogs attack each the other and police their comments. Unlike mainstream news organizations who seldom if ever criticize another newspaper, even though they are competing.
The blogosphere also reacts faster. The mainstream news has journalists assigned to offices in various nations. They have camera teams and photographers on call. However, now, the blogosphere taps on the public, or more properly a portion of the public. This equals MANY times more bodies in many more locations and they are often able to be at the scene of a breaking news event much faster.
The blogosphere also provides something else in spades: Diversity.
Nowhere can be found such a diverse range of topics to read about written by people from so many different countries. Although many are amateurish, poorly written and uninteresting, the field generates a few diamonds out of every bushel. These folks may never have been able to write professionally or reach such a large audience if they had to travel through conventional media channels. The odds that they could retain their appeal and not be filtered or pushed to fill some pidgeonhole is also slim.
The blogosphere has not reached its full potential. It already has drained hits from conventional media.
When it provides news and video faster and better than conventional news can-it will naturally be the new frontrunner. Build a better mousetrap and all that...
