Well, one other aspect in creating fairness and credibility is when money is at stake. As a news outlet starts to generate revenues from advertisements-accountability is a side effect. When Kerry pulled his ad from Daily KOS after said f-em about the contractors murdered, it illustrated this relationship between advertisers and content.
The accountability you speak of in the mainstream news is also brought about by the same mechanism. Stockholders and revenues determine content to a large degree.
If all you have is no-name advertising, you can probably get away with bringing a clear agenda to the table. If you have some heavy-hitters dropping down cash for ads, they'll expect the content to remain within the parameters of good taste and the public bandwidth of debate. They won't want to be associated with a biased organization. If the blog news project becomes clearly GOP or DEM you can kiss the big advertisers good-bye.
In the wrong hands you would see this project turn into another biased site that polarizes its visitors. However in the hands of someone who has some business experience it will be just as balanced as any mainstream news.
I'm not saying the blogosphere is the end-all be-all of communication mediums, instead I think it adds a LOT to the party.
