I should also mention that economic arguments such as what I just described for Intel's fab plant, is what killed the advance of commerical aviation. Boeing kept betting their company for bigger and better jetliners. Eventually the amount required for developing the Boeing 2707 SST was more than Boeing could justify. From that point on, technological advance in commerical aviation was stalled and we've been stuck with flying in B-747s ever since.
