Evolution predicts that the process of natural selection on random mutation is ongoing, all around us, right now. One need look no farther than new strains of bacteria and viruses -- especially those variations of older strains which we have rendered resistant to the medicines we use to kill them. Granted, in the latter case, the selection is artificial, but it is still selection.

The way I see it, they have a choice: Either every "new" strain of bacteria and virus has always existed -- which does not explain why they have not been detected previously (see, for example, HIV and the latest avian flu) -- or the "designer" is still active in the contemporary world.

This latter is especially disturbing, as it is equivalent to divine intervention. I have no doubt many of the ID adherents would prefer that explanation, since it also implies divine retribution, a favorite cry of the most radical among them regarding HIV.
